Deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 9:36 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, to a call about an unresponsive driver with children in the vehicle near Town Center Boulevard, officials said.

Deputies located the vehicle near Richmond Highway and Coachman Circle and attempted a traffic stop after the driver committed a lane violation.

When the deputy approached the car, the driver—Bowie resident Aaron Clark, 42—showed clear signs of impairment and had a noticeable amount of white powder on his nose and lip, authorities said.

During a search of his person, deputies found suspected controlled substances, and Clark admitted to using cocaine, police said.

A search of the vehicle also uncovered additional suspected cocaine.

Because the two children inside were in close proximity to the drugs, Fire and Rescue personnel were dispatched to check for possible exposure, but none was found, and the children were released to a second adult, authorities said.

Clark was arrested and charged with:

  • Felony child neglect;
  • Driving under the influence;
  • Possession of controlled substances;
  • Failure to maintain lane.

He was taken to Rappahannock Regional Jail and held without bond.
